  15. Welcome to Norton CrashGuard 4.01
  16. ============================================================================

  18. What's New in CrashGuard 4.01
  19. -----------------------------
  20. Norton CrashGuard 4.01 includes increased QuickReload functionality for 
  21. Internet Explorer and Netscape. It also includes increased VitalSave 
  22. coverage for many popular programs, including Microsoft Office 2000.
  23.  
  24. Norton CrashGuard 4.01 also includes many other product refinements that 
  25. improve CrashGuard's ability to protect you from the effects of computer 
  26. crashes and freezes.
  27.  
  28. CrashGuard 4.0 Features
  29. -----------------------
  30. CrashGuardÆs Crash Monitor, Crash Assistant, and Crash Advisor work
  31. together to help you easily recover from crashes and freezes. Each time you
  32. start your computer, Crash Monitor begins monitoring your system for
  33. crashes. In the event of a crash, Crash Monitor alerts Crash Assistant to
  34. help you recover from the crash. Then, Crash Advisor recommends a recovery
  35. option based on your program and system status.
  36.  
  37. Norton CrashGuard 4.0 also includes new and improved crash/freeze recovery
  38. options, including VitalSave, QuickReload, Revive, AntiFreeze, and
  39. Terminate. These options are explained in detail in the online User's Guide
  40. and online help.

  42. New in this release, SafeOriginal monitors the crashed program, and when
  43. the program tries to write to your file, SafeOriginal creates a copy of the
  44. original file and stores it in the SafeOriginal folder. That way, if the
  45. program corrupts your file or overwrites it with data, you can revert to
  46. the undamaged duplicate SafeOriginal file.

  51. Norton CrashGuard Product Demo
  52. ------------------------------
  53. The Norton CrashGuard demo walks you through CrashGuardÆs new
  54. features, a crash experience, and gives you general information about
  55. crashes and freezes. It is a good idea to watch the demo before you install
  56. CrashGuard so you can become familiar with its features.
  57.  
  58. To view the demo:
  59.   1. Insert the CrashGuard installation CD in your CD-ROM drive.
  60.   2. Click View CrashGuard Demo.
  61.   3. Press Esc at any time to exit the demo.
  62. After installation, the CrashGuard demo is also available from the
  63. CrashGuard program folder in the Start menu.

  65. Norton CrashGuard User's Guide
  66. ------------------------------
  67. Norton CrashGuard contains an online User's Guide. The Adobe Acrobat
  68. file, NCG4.PDF, and a copy of the Adobe Acrobat Reader, AR32E301.EXE,
  69. are located in the Manual folder on the CrashGuard CD.

  71. To install Adobe Acrobat Reader:
  72.   1. Use Explorer to navigate to the Manual folder on the CrashGuard CD.
  73.   2. Double-click AR32E301.EXE.
  74.  
  75. To read the User's Guide:
  76.   1. Install Adobe Acrobat Reader on your computer if it is not already
  77.      installed.
  78.   2. Use Explorer to navigate to the Manual folder on the CrashGuard CD.
  79.   3. Double-click NCG4.PDF. The Acrobat Reader opens displaying the
  80.      CrashGuard UserÆs Guide.

  82. Norton CrashGuard CD Booklet
  83. ----------------------------
  84. There is an informational booklet enclosed in your CD case. It contains
  85. installation instructions, system requirements, and an overview of how to
  86. use Norton CrashGuard.

  89. ============================================================================
  90. Important Notes
  91. ============================================================================
  92.  
  93. Disk Space
  94. ----------
  95. Over time, entries in CrashGuard's SafeOriginal folder can occupy
  96. a significant amount of disk space. If you have this feature enabled
  97. and you run out of disk space on the drive where CrashGuard is
  98. installed, you can delete the contents of your SafeOriginal folder to
  99. free up disk space. The default SafeOriginal folder location is
  100. C:\Program Files\Norton CrashGuard\SafeOrig folder. To delete the contents
  101. of the SafeOriginal folder, open Norton CrashGuard settings and click the
  102. SafeOriginal tab. Then click Delete Now in the SafeOriginal Delete Options
  103. group box.

  105. The Norton CrashGuard 4.01 installation requires approximately 30 MB 
  106. of temporary space on your hard drive. If you try to install Norton 
  107. CrashGuard with less disk space available, the installation might fail.
  108.  
  109. Installation Issues
  110. -------------------
  111. Even though Norton CrashGuard 4.01 allows you the flexibility to install 
  112. on a network drive, it is not recommended.  SafeOriginal does not 
  113. support network installations.
  114.  
  115. Norton CrashGuard 4.01 does not support installations where the install 
  116. path contains \\.
  117.  
  118. Turning off Norton CrashGuard
  119. -----------------------------
  120. When you change settings to turn off crash intervention, CrashGuard might
  121. continue to provide protection to those programs that it has fixed since
  122. you last started Windows. To disable CrashGuard, you should restart
  123. Windows after disabling crash protection.
  124.  
  125. VitalSave with FreezeCheck
  126. --------------------------
  127. Normally VitalSave prompts you to save any open document, then closes the
  128. application. When you select VitalSave from FreezeCheck, the program's main
  129. window, sometimes referred to as the frame window, might not close. When
  130. this happens, you should close the program manually. In cases where the
  131. program is not responding normally, use FreezeCheck to access Terminate so
  132. you can close the window.

  134. SafeOriginal
  135. ------------
  136. When SafeOriginal detects disk-write activity, it creates a copy of all
  137. files affected by the crash. This means that besides your actual documents,
  138. other support files might be backed up. SafeOriginal does not back up .TMP
  139. files, files that begin with ~$, shortcuts, and some specific .INI files.
  140.  
  141. If Norton CrashGuard 4.01 detects a problem with your SafeOriginal folder, 
  142. or if the SafeOriginal folder specified in Settings does not exist,  
  143. SafeOriginal stores its files in your Windows temporary directory.  This 
  144. folder is generally C:\WINDOWS\TEMP.

  146. Norton Web Services
  147. -------------------
  148. LiveUpdate Pro requires an active subscription to Norton Web Services.
  149. Norton Web Services is an Internet-based service designed to enhance
  150. your PC and keep it healthy. The annual subscription fee is $29.95.
  151.  
  152. Norton CrashGuard includes a discounted 6-month subscription to Norton
  153. Web Services. To begin your subscription, read the instructions on the
  154. Norton Web Services coupon in the CrashGuard box.

  158. Compatibility Issues
  159. ============================================================================
  160.  
  161. Earlier Versions of Norton CrashGuard
  162. -------------------------------------
  163. Norton CrashGuard 4.01 can be installed over an existing earlier version.
  164. However, it is also possible to install an earlier version over 4.01. If you
  165. try to install an earlier version over version 4.01, the newer files are
  166. preserved. However, the older version replaces the Start Menu shortcuts.
  167. This can occur if you install Norton CrashGuard Deluxe 3.0, Norton
  168. Utilities 3.0, or Norton SystemWorks 1.0 over Norton CrashGuard 4.01.
  169. To correct this situation, reinstall CrashGuard 4.01.
  170.  
  171. Norton CrashGuard Deluxe 3.0
  172. ----------------------------
  173. If you want to use Norton CrashGuard Deluxe 3.0 and Norton CrashGuard 4.01
  174. on the same computer, you should install Norton CrashGuard Deluxe first,
  175. then install Norton CrashGuard 4.01 over it. If you have to install Norton
  176. CrashGuard Deluxe 3.0 after Norton CrashGuard 4.01, do not install them in
  177. the same folder.

  179. If you install Norton CrashGuard 3.0 (from Norton CrashGuard Deluxe 3.0,
  180. Norton Utilities 3.0, or Norton SystemWorks 1.0) over Norton CrashGuard
  181. 4.01, and then uninstall CrashGuard, the removal process prompts you to
  182. remove the SafeOriginal folder. If you choose not to remove the
  183. SafeOriginal folder, the uninstall program leaves behind the SafeOriginal
  184. folder contents, as well as some Norton CrashGuard program files.
  185.  
  186. Because CrashGuard 4.01 has enhanced options, all of its settings are not
  187. available in Norton CrashGuard Deluxe 3.0. To change Norton CrashGuard 4.01
  188. settings, like crash protection and SafeOriginal settings, click Settings in
  189. the CrashGuard 4.01 main window. Use CrashGuard Deluxe 3.0 Settings to change
  190. scan settings.
  191.  
  192. Windows NT 4.0
  193. --------------
  194. After installing Norton CrashGuard on Windows NT, the SafeOriginal feature
  195. will not become active until you restart the computer. This occurs because
  196. the driver necessary to start SafeOriginal cannot be loaded except during
  197. startup.
  198.  
  199. Under Windows NT, if you do not have administrator rights, you cannot 
  200. change CrashGuard 4.01 settings. Also, an error message might appear if 
  201. you do not have write access to the SafeOriginal folder.
  202.  
  203. The SafeOriginal feature does not function for certain types of 16-bit 
  204. faults when running under Windows NT.
  205.  
  206. Dr. Watson and Windows 98
  207. -------------------------
  208. With Windows 98, if you would like to generate a Dr. Watson log, you should
  209. turn off CrashGuard 4.01. If both Dr. Watson and Norton CrashGuard are
  210. running when a crash occurs, the Dr. Watson log file will be incomplete,
  211. and CrashGuard's ability to recover from the crash will be diminished.

  213. Internet Browsers and QuickReload
  214. ----------------------------------
  215. Occasionally when Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 crashes, QuickReload will
  216. open the crashed URL in your default browser if you have multiple browsers
  217. installed on your computer. For example, if you have Netscape Communicator
  218. defined as your default browser, the page will reload in Netscape, even if
  219. the crash occurred in Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0.
  220.  
  221. With Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0, the QuickReload button is not
  222. available if you have the Active Desktop integrated into the Windows shell.
  223.  
  224. During a Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 crash, the name of the crashed
  225. program might display as Explorer or even Program Manager.
  226.  
  227. STB Velocity 128
  228. ----------------
  229. You may experience difficulty with CrashGuard's blue screen protection with
  230. this video driver.  We recommend updating to the latest available driver or
  231. disabling CrashGuard's Blue Screen crash protection.
  232.  
  233. pcANYWHERE32
  234. ------------
  235. If you use Terminate on a pcANYWHERE32 host waiting on IPX, you might 
  236. encounter problems if you restart the host without first restarting your 
  237. computer.
  238.  
  239. Under Windows NT, Terminate might not close the pcANYWHERE32 host.
